A short story which follows a Sergeant in the Ukrainian Marines

Ukraine Rising is a short story of war, terror and redemption.

It is set during, and in the inevitable aftermath of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine this short story follows a small band of Marines from the Ukrainian Naval Infantry Corps, as they head to Bucha. Driven by a desperate desire to reach their families, the soldiers lives are changed forever following a tragic encounter with a Russian infantry platoon and its brutal Corporal.

The ensuing interaction, with its tragic outcome has unintended consequences for Ukrainian Marine Sergeant Marko Domitrovich, Russian Private Konstantin Orlov and both of their families. Consequences which have a profound and bizarrely transformative impact on Ukraine and Russia into the future that follows the war.

Can you actually eat history?

Trench Cake

During World War One troops were under enormous pressure fighting in the trenches. Families back home in the UK were limited by the lack of ingredients due to rationing, but they were also enormously resourceful.

The families making the cakes were very inventive and made cakes from the ingredients they had available. The cakes also had to be robust enough and long lasting to be sent by post whilst remining edible when they arrived.

They proved to be great morale-boosters for the soldiers and airmen.

Eggs not easy to get hold of so vinegar was used instead. Dried fruits helped the cake stay moist for a period. As flour was rationed, Trench cake was made small and compact. Perfect for transporting from Britain to the trenches of France.

There were variations on the cake as families did the best, they could with the ingredients they had to hand. For example, sugar was often substituted with molasses or honey as it was not easy to get hold of.

The cakes not only gave the troops nutritional value but they reminded them of what they were fighting for and that they were loved by those at home.

This is a typical list of ingredients:

½ C milk

½ tsp baking soda

1/3 C + 1 TBSP currants or raisins

1 C all-purpose flour

½ C margarine

2 tsp cocoa powder

1 tsp vinegar

1/3 C + 1 TBSP brown sugar

Spices – traditionally they used whatever was available like ginger, nutmeg, lemon zest and cinnamon.

It is well worth making one of these cakes as they are fun, especially for kids, to make. But they also remind us of their important role in history and the love which they were made with. Why not make a Trench cake now?

The ominous Castle Zbiroh and its Nazi past!

The beautiful and sleepy Castle Zbiroh lies situated amid vast forests in the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic. It has a dark and mysterious past including links to the Knights Templar, the Freemasons and Hitler's SS.

During WW2 the invading German army took it over. They in turn were kicked out by the Nazi SS.

But why did they want it so much and why was it shrouded in secrecy?

Part of the reason was that the Nazis had found that the rock that the castle was built on greatly enhanced their radio listening abilities. But anecdotal evidence and research has found that they also used the Castle as a hiding place in the closing months of the war. Rumour has it that munitions, classified documents and gold were secreted within the castle and its mysterious well!

Some investigations have been made but there has been great concern that the well or any secret caverns were heavily mined by the Nazis.

Brancaster Staithe in Chapter 32

The windswept shores of Brancaster Staithe

On the remote North Norfolk coast lies a tiny fishing hamlet called Brancaster Staithe . It is famed for its shellfish, Brancaster Mussels. I've eaten Mussels freshly collected by the locals myself. They were the finest I have ever tasted.

The place is little changed by time and has a wonderful charm particularly on a blustery day, of which there are many.

It serves as the setting for the action in Chapter 32 and in particular the 'Whelk scene' at the tiny shack named 'The Crab Hut'. It is a quaint place to stop for a fresh seafood snack before walking down to the shore to listen to the wind and the gulls as they tumble through the air.

I spent several days in North Norfolk researching my novel See Glass and some of the happiest times were at Brancaster Staithe , eating Cockles and Whelks liberally doused in pepper and malt vinegar while I looked out across the desolate waters heavily laden with the smell of salt.

What is the secret meaning of the letter Z the Russians use for the invasion?

Z is not a letter in the Russian alphabet. Z is a Latin letter and not a part of the Russian Cyrillic alphabet. Does that tell you something? Is the mark, Z, as it is being used, a letter at all? Or is it a coded symbol for something much more sinister? What is the answer to the riddle?

Z was first seen hastily painted onto Russian tanks as they began attacking Ukraine on 24 ^th February 2022. After its initial appearance, Z has been printed on cars, posters and even t-shirts. The most notorious being on the shirt of the Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak. The symbol is viewed by some as a pro-war and nationalistic emblem, much the same as the Nazi Swastika or Hakenkreuz as it is known in German.

Try this:

Write the letter Z on a thin piece of paper. This is the symbol for the Russian half of the conundrum. Next draw another Z across its centre. The second Z to symbolize the secret Russian allies in the West. Then turn the paper over.

You will see Hitlers notorious Nazi Swastika.

Alternatively, if you put the two Z symbols side by side and then turn the paper over you get the symbol for the Nazi SchutzStaffel or as we all know them the SS. The use of two ZZ symbols produces the SS badge written with the Armanen runes. Adolf Hitler’s paramilitary force wreaked carnage during World War II killing men, women, and children indiscriminately. Now we face that once more in Europe.

So, what could these symbols have to do with the attack on Ukraine?

It is an attack on the world order!

The Russians bravely fought the Nazis in WW2 and helped rid the world of the Nazis and Adolf Hitler. But not before millions of their own people died.

I meticulously researched See Glass and proposed what I believed was a fictional threat in the form of a neo-Nazi plot. It dated back to what we all thought were the dying days of the Nazis in Berlin, in 1945.

However, the conspiracy that had endured for over half a century had a trigger point. It seems that humanity may have reached that impasse.

Putin appears to have convinced the Russian people through misinformation that it is the Ukrainians who are the neo-Nazis. But the world knows different.

The brave Ukrainians have opened all of our eyes.

I believe that the Russian people are decent and that when they fully understand what has been done in their name, then there will be a terrible reckoning for Putin.

Of the best sellers in Amazon audiobooks, twenty-four were written by David Baldacci and twelve by Lee Child. So thirty-six of the top fifty audiobooks are by two authors. Unsurprising in a way, as they are both top thriller and crime writers.

Another entrant is Bill Clinton and James Patterson's, The President is Missing . Expected, given who they both are - it's also a great read or even a great listen! Nelson DeMille's Plum Island is there as I would expect. It is one of my favourite novels and was my first introduction to the wonderfully clever novels of DeMille. It is listed 34 but personally I think i should be much higher up the bestseller list.

Audiobooks are undergoing enormous growth in the USA and in countries such as the UK and India. They offer great convenience when people are commuting, exercising or working at home. People can make the mundane, such as hoovering, bearable with fiction novels to keep the mind active.

Espionage thrillers – the lure of the spy!

The birth of the spy novel.

Spies have been with us all the way back to the ancient world even, as evidence shows, back as far back as the court of the Babylonian King Hammurabi. He died in or around 1750 B.C.

Espionage was also prevalent among the Ancient Egyptians who had a secret service and in the Greek and Roman world.

This followed through the ages with even the great Elizabethan playwright, and a contemporary of Shakespeare, Christopher, or Kit, Marlowe being said to be a spy for the British government.

Spying only expanded through the ages as espionage became more entwined with governments and world events such as the colonial period, the Great Game in central and south Asia, the ensuing World War I and II and the subsequent Cold War.

Spy fiction is immensely popular among readers, and it saw its birth among novels such as the early espionage novel, Kim from 1901 by Rudyard Kipling, The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers (one of my personal favourites) published in 1903 and the thriller The Schirmer Inheritance of 1953 by Eric Ambler and the classic, The Quiet American of 1955 which is set in Vietnam and was written by Graham Greene.

They are three wonderful novels which are all well worth reading. Incidentally once you read The Quiet American and if you get a taste for Vietnam and the Far East then Up Country by Nelson DeMille is another favourite of mine.

Who could mention the espionage novel without speaking of the spy books of Ian Fleming concerning the super-spy James Bond or the subsequent films by Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli and his daughter Barbara Broccoli. The amazing film adaptions by the Broccolis hooked the masses into the world of espionage. My personal favourite Bonds being the iconic Sean Connery, Roger Moore and of course that master of his craft Daniel Craig.

Spy novels and e spionage thrillers can be immensely exciting, convoluted, and informative. Many of the greatest fiction writers have been spies themselves.

Some of my favourite espionage fiction writers include G. K. Chesterton, Helen MacInnes, Ken Follett, John le Carré, Graham Greene, Len Deighton, Desmond Bagley, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, Robert Littell, Julian Semyonov and Brad Thor.

Where is it and who has it?

With the new James Bond movie coming out No Time To Die it's time to revisit the unsolved 007 mystery.

Who is the Mr Big mastermind who took the most famous car in the world in 1997 from a private aircraft hangar in Florida. Sounds like an opening to a thriller?

The Aston Martin DB5 which was driven by the wonderful Sir Sean Connery in Goldfinger disappeared without trace and entered legend.

Rumours have abounded ever since about this classic James Bond car, with possible sightings as far away as Dubai.

A story straight out of a James Bond espionage novel . Will it ever be solved - maybe!

Mystery and Suspense Magazine is an internet based magazine, headed up by the highly experienced team of Editor-in-Chief, Sam Boush and Production Editor, Tehra Peace.

Sam himself is an award winning journalist and they are both novelists.

Purple - why should you care?

The color purple is everywhere - walk with the Caesars

Earlier this year archaeologists unearthed ancient woollen textiles colored in purple. They were found in Israel. The purple dye was made from a sea snail. Long go it was worth more than gold.

Astonishingly the wool containing the dye dates back to 1000 BC and it still looks vibrant.

The items were discovered near Timna which at that time would have been ruled by the fabled King David.

This rich purple dye was described in the Bible as argaman, and it was the preserve of royals and priests. The discovery was made in Israel’s southern tip though the dye itself comes from the dye glands of murex sea snails which are found on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The site of the find is Slave’s Hill near the Red Sea, so it travelled a considerable distance from where it originated to where it lay for three thousand years.

The dye was highly prized in ancient times because of its glorious shade of purple and its ability not to fade.

There have also been finds of this exclusive dye going back to 2000BC though these were closer to the Mediterranean where the dye originates.

The colour was known by many names including Tyrian purple, royal purple, Phoenician red, Phoenician purple, imperial dye or my personal favourite imperial purple.

Roman magistrates wore a white toga edged with a stripe of Tyrian purple. Roman generals celebrating a triumph wore solid Tyrian purple with a gold stripe.

Eventually only the Roman emperor were allowed to wear Tyrian purple.

The next time you wear a purple scarf or dress or tie or even a suit, consider the richness of the colour, its history and its very royal associations and enjoy!

Ghost Station reveals Shocking Nazi Past

Where did 86 tons of gold go?

It's hard to believe that such a place could exist, but it actually does!

Lying dormant for over half a century an absolutely enormous train station built in the classic French style lies hidden deep in the Pyrenees on the border of France and Spain. But this ghost station hides a very dark secret dating back to the Nazis.

The secret was uncovered by by chance by a Coach driver called Jonathan Diaz. While on a break he went into the station and began to look around. Seeing a pile of aged paper in a corner of a decaying customs house he flicked through them. He stopped when he saw the words 'gold bars'.

Though he didn't know it at the time, he had uncovered a secret which had lain hidden since WWII. Canfranc, as the station is known, was well known to those involved in espionage in the past and in the present. There are those who wanted that secret to remain with the ghosts for a very good reason.

The station had been the haunt of spies, escaping Jews, Nazis and fascists and members of the resistance. It's dark past had not been mentioned in any of the history books ...but it was there, waiting to be revealed

US President Bill Clinton declassified documents which began to peal back an ugly truth which linked in with the discovery by Jonathan Diaz.

Unknown to the world 86 tons of Nazi gold had passed through the station during the war. It was heading to fascist General Franco in Spain.

Why?

It was payment for masses of tungsten which was required for the German war effort.

Though the allies tried to return to its rightful owners, the gold stolen by the Nazis, the Spanish government of the time returned very little.

The discovery by a coach driver on his break has created a furore which embroils many states and creates intense embarrassment.

UNBELIEVABLE! Pensioner hides Nazi tank in basement - you could not write it!

He also had an anti-aircraft gun and a WW2 torpedo

If you wrote this as part of a thriller novel then nobody would believe you!

An 84 year old pensioner found himself in hot water with the German authorities when it was found that he had a 1943 WW2 Nazi Panther tank (not pictured) in his basement along with 70 assault rifles, 2,000 rounds of ammo, a mortar and best of all an 88mm anti-aircraft gun and a torpedo.

I used to collect stamps and people thought that that was strange!

Forget how he found them in the first place, forget the enormous cost of them, forget how on earth he got them into the basement - ask yourself why would a pensioner even bother! He certainly was more industrious than most people half his age.

This strange story started in Heikendorf in the suburbs of Keil in Northern Germany.

Lee Child is a true Titan in the world of mystery, crime thriller writers

Lee Child’s emergence into the world of fiction writers is a true inspiration.

Lee Child was born in 1954 in Coventry, UK. His name prior to his writing career was James Dover Grant until he began using his pen name.

He is probably best known as the creator of the Jack Reacher character and novels which have been hugely successful and some of which have been made into Hollywood Blockbusters.

So where did it all start? He was educated at King Edward's School in Birmingham which is in the centre of England. From there he went on to do a law degree at the University of Sheffield. He said that he never had any intention of pursuing a career in the law – how fortunate for us, his readers!

He has a brother called Andrew Grant who is also a successful writer.

Lee Child’s adventure books follow Jack Reacher - man of mystery - who dispenses his own kind of justice. The character was formerly an American Military Policeman and a good one at that!

Killing Floor was his first novel which was published in 1997 and it won two awards unsurprisingly - the Anthony Award and the Barry Award for Best First Novel.

For a time Lee Child worked in a theatre and then went into commercial television in Granada TV where he worked on many well-known and respected UK television productions. He was made redundant from this job and following this he began to write.

Following the success of his first novel he moved to the USA where his career as a fiction writer of crime thrillers with a heavy dose of revenge skyrocketed.

The nom de plume Lee Child is aid to come from the way he said the name of Renault's Le Car when he was a child which moved forward to ‘Lee Child’ for his daughter ‘Ruth’.

Lee Child is not just a truly great writer of crime fiction and mystery thrillers. He is also a true inspiration as someone who can take a terrible blow in life such as redundancy later in his career who dusts himself down and through sheer ability and grit rises up way higher. Whenever I start one of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books I remember that star quality which seem to give his books greater resonance for me.

I was going to write a blog about one of my favourite authors, Alistair MacLean. However I read a very fine post by Matthew Ward and I felt it was more appropriate to encourage you to read it. Alistair Maclean wrote such classics as Ice Station Zebra and The Guns of Navarone. His action adventure stories are hard to beat with one of my favourite books being Where Eagles Dare.

A tale of an unassuming elderly Jewish woman's heroic journey

If you want to watch a great Hollywood film about tenacity and justice then the Woman in Gold is a great start. It is based on a true story of a woman’s fight to return what was rightfully the property of her family after a lifetime had nearly passed. The film stars Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Katie Holmes, Charles Dance, Daniel Brühl, Tatiana Maslany, Max Irons and Jonathan Pryce. It was directed by the wonderfully talented Simon Curtis .

The film was based on the actual story of an elderly Jewish woman called Maria Altmann who lived in Los Angeles, California. Along with her highly skilled lawyer Randy Schoenberg they took action against the government of Austria for the return of the famous Gustav Klimt's - Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Adelle was Maria Altmann’s aunt. During WWII it was stolen by the Nazi’s in Vienna which was stolen from her relatives by the Nazis in Vienna just prior to World War II.

It is a superb film about tenacity, justice, history and a wonderful painting which has captured the world’s attention.

It is not the only Klimt painting which was stolen by the Nazis which has been returned.

France promised to return the Nazi-looted Klimt painting called ‘Rosebushes under the Trees’ to the rightful Jewish heirs

Klimt had a very particular style which has found many contemporary admirers.

The SAS officers cap badge is featured above. It is a beautifully crafted badge in silver and gilt.

The SAS or Special Air Service is an elite unit of the British Army. It was formed as a regiment in 1941 as a regiment. In 1950 it became a corps.

The SAS has been elevated in popular culture to an almost mythical elite unit. They became internationally renowned during Margaret Thatcher’s term as Prime Ministers after the televised rescue of hostages held during the 1980 Iranian Embassy terrorist siege.

The SAS is based in Hereford and specialises in hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, covert reconnaissance and direct action.

The unit is formed of the 22nd Special Air Service Regiment, the reserve units 21 Special Air Service Regiment and the 23rd Special Air Service Regiment. The Royal Navy has a similar unit called the SBS or Special Boat Service which deals with maritime counter-terrorism.

The SAS is classified top secret and it is difficult to give much information about them as it is all highly classified.

Explosive News! HIMMLER'S HALF A BILLION IN GOLD may have just been found echoing the novel See Glass.

Real life mimics 'See Glass' fiction in Palace Minkowski in southern Poland.

Heinrich Himmler 's half a billion in gold may have been found in a Palace in southern Poland near the village of Minkowskie . Other treasure and paintings are also hidden there.

The decaying 18th century palace was used during the war by the Nazis elite SS as a brothel. Treasure hunters are intent on digging up what is thought to be at least 48 crates with over 10 tonnes of gold which have remained hidden since the war.

It is believed that the missing 'Gold of Breslau' may be part of the secret hoard.

The secret came to light in documents released by an SS officers descendants. The officer may have been called 'von Stein'.

A diary which has also been released also has the details of a further 28 tonnes of treasure. This is at the bottom of a well at another palace near Roztoka .

The diary is thought to have been written by a high-ranking SS officer who used the pseudonym, Michaelis.

The hunt for Himmler's gold is being led by Roman Furmaniak who is head of the Silesian Bridge foundation.

Astonishing similarities are evident between this newspaper expose and the novel 'See Glass' by Ido Graf :

Half a billion in gold and it looks like there may be even more!!!! I feel like running to the garage to grab a shovel and then heading off to Heathrow airport as fast as I can go with my passport, bound for Poland!

WWII Nazi Luger holster and clip as featured in See Glass

Luger PO8 holster

Featured is a picture of the Luger PO8 holster as featured in Chapter 57 of the novel See Glass . The spare clip and Luger tool are also featured.

The Luger tool was housed inside the top of the holster in a leather pocket. The spare clip was held in a leather pouch lying down the side of the holster.

The Luger is an iconic pistol from WWII, but the craftmanship of the hard-shell holster itself is often overlooked.

The holsters were made from leather and were wet formed, and hand stitched. On the reverse can be found a makers mark and belt loops.

The holster was issued to Field Officers and soldiers who needed a pistol such as Aircrew, Machine Gun Crews, Military Police and Tank Crews.

It was made in brown and black leather.

The Editor & Publisher of South West Florida online has read and given a very full review of See Glass which I am very grateful for.

Don Browne said, 'Spending many holiday hours reading this year, the new novel See Glass by author Ido Graf kept my attention for a good number of days and nights.

I mused about the possibilities of world-wide conspiracies overturning democratic governments in one fell swoop, as spies lurk behind every corner watching each other.'

He went on to say, 'One objection I found in typesetting was the use of italics for a lengthy portions of the novel; notating a manuscript written by one of the characters. My older eyes had great difficulty reading those sections without eyestrain.'

I fully accept this and am grateful for the feedback. I am currently working on a Large Print version and an Audio book which will hopefully alleviate this issue.

Moon Gazer Ale at the Salthouse Dun Cow Public House

A days walking on the saltmarshes followed by a fine pint in a historic Inn.

Thanks are due to one of my international readers, Mark, for letting me know that my novel , See Glass, was mentioned on the Moon Gazer Facebook page on 25th October 2020.

I well remember spending a wonderful day walking along the beaches and across the enigmatic salt marshes around the remote village of Salthouse . It is a pretty hamlet which traces its origins way back beyond the Domesday book.

The sea had begun to get choppy and dark rainclouds were forming along the horizon.

So, I was glad to happen on a quaint and historic country pub, The Dun Cow Inn . I warmed myself there and polished off a fine plate of the renowned and local Brancaster mussels – certainly not to be missed!

I then sat by the window as the rain began to fall in sheets across the marshes while I drank a couple of pints of Moon Gazer beer.

It was then that I began to formulate, in my mind, the chapter in the pub.

Sadly, for Mark and for many of my international readers, you may find it difficult to source the award winning and traditional Moon Gazer beers - so you may just need to plan a trip to England. The North Norfolk Coast is a great spot for bird watchers, history buffs and lovers of the great outdoors and for aficionados of fine traditional ale.
